Setting an export turnover target of 4 billion USD in 2023, but by the end of the first quarter, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports reached nearly 1 billion USD. So the remaining three-quarters of the way are enough to pull this industry to the finish line?
On May 6, Tuoi Tre Online discussed with Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen – general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association – about the situation of Vietnamese fruit and vegetable exports . Mr. Nguyen said that by the end of the first quarter, the industry’s exports reached nearly 1 billion USD, up 8% over the same period last year. The Chinese market alone increased by 23%.
Need a lot of “leverage” to bring in 4 billion USD
According to a business owner exporting dragon fruit to Japan (in Long An province), vegetables are a potential commodity. To have the impetus to help vegetable and fruit exports increase sharply throughout the year, he said that a lot of “leverage” is needed.
“It is necessary to sign more protocols for a number of officially exported products such as dragon fruit, mango, watermelon, jackfruit, rambutan… The Chinese market needs to open up more for items such as pomelo skins. green, fresh coconut, avocado, lemon, pineapple, breast milk.
To promote more activities to open other markets such as: Korea, Japan, Australia, USA… Particularly for durian, in order to increase the export turnover of the industry in 2023, it is necessary to negotiate to license more codes. growing area and packing number. And call for capital investment and advanced technology for fruit and vegetable processing enterprises to increase export value,” this business proposed.
“The impressive export level of nearly 1 billion USD is due to the fact that Vietnam signed a protocol to officially export durian, sweet potatoes, and bananas to the Chinese market, and pomelos to the US and lemons to New Zealand.
In particular, durian export is a major contributor to the impressive export results of the fruit and vegetable industry in the first three months of the year. Durian alone brought in 420 million USD in turnover last year,” Nguyen shared the reason.
Assessing the export turnover plan of this industry set at 4 billion USD, an increase of 20% is “promising”. Mr. Nguyen analyzed: “Only durian, the export is very favorable in the immediate future. If the favorable situation lasts, the turnover of this king fruit will reach about 1 billion USD.
It is not difficult to think about other fruit and vegetable products that weigh on one end and add up, pushing the industry’s overall export turnover to US$4 billion.”
As an enterprise with a growing area and exporting a huge amount of melons to Japan and Asian countries, Mr. Ho Nguyen Long (an enterprise in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City) shared the story of exporting “home” do”.
“I grow melons according to standard technology, grow and export them to Japan and other countries. Initially, I sold as much as I could. But with quality goods, the partner side came here to … pre-order and order.
This year, the area and production of melons increased. Looking at the general context, I put many prospects for this industry to reach the finish line,” said Mr. Long.
